Basic Architecture of Computer

Q4. Briefly explain the basic architecture of a computer.

Ans. Since a computer follows input-process-output cycle, the first stage is performed in computer by input unit, second stage is performed by its central processing unit and the third stage is performed by output unit. Thus the basic structure of a computer is as shown below:

The main memory holds the input and intermediate output during the processing.

Components of the Computer System

Q1. Write in short about the Components of the Computer System.

Ans. A computer system can be divided roughly into four components:

  1. Hardware
  2. Operating System
  3. Application Programs
  4. Users

1. Hardware

The central processing unit (CPU), the memory, and the input/output (I/O) devices – provides the basic computing resources for the system.

2. Operating System

The operating system controls the hardware and coordinates its use among the various application programs for the various users.

3. Application System

The application program – such as word processor, spreadsheets, compilers, and Web browsers – defines the ways in which these resources are used to solve user’s computing problems.

4. Users

The users – such as people, embedded system, machines and other computers are various users.
